By Stephen Smith, Globe Staff

A dozen more cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Massachusetts, public health authorities announced this morning, bringing the total in the state to 83.

Eight of the 12 cases confirmed Thursday by the state's laboratory in Jamaica Plain were in children and teenagers. A 14-year-old and an infant under 1, both from Middlesex County, were hospitalized but are recovering. In addition to Middlesex, confirmed cases were reported in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Worcester counties.

Nationwide, 1,639 cases have been confirmed, according to figures released this morning by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with Illinois accounting for almost one-quarter of illnesses caused by the H1N1 flu virus.
